For example, if a child does not understand sarcasm or humor, she may make literal interpretations during conversations with others, thereby leading to misunderstandings, and changes in cognitive and psychosocial functioning may contribute to academic struggles and negative self-perceptions. Challenges for the student with TBI also might include physical limitations and developmental challenges (e.g., dealing with normal changes that occur with increasing age but with differing capabilities). Issues of transition (from hospital to school, within school, and school to work) need to be addressed so that functional impairment is minimized (Ylvisaker et al., 2001). Further, family members likely will need support to deal with changes in their lives as a result of the TBI and subsequent changes in the child, and teachers and other professionals working with the child need to be educated about expectations and evolving abilities and recovery. For children with TBI, assessment needs to be conducted as soon as possible in order to institute appropriate interventions. In the year following the injury period, many students with TBI should receive extended school year services due to the need for continued rehabilitation until recovery has clearly reached a plateau.
